(Please visit The Mamafesto for more about my feminist vision: This Is What A Feminist Looks Like: Anne.)
As to porn, I never thought of it as feminist — on the contrary — until I came across progressive, transformed feminist porn by women who’ve seized the means of representation to explore and define sexuality on their terms, freeing both women and men from traditional erotic conventions and claustrophobic gender roles. Having researched feminist pornography for more than a decade, I have become an acknowledged expert in the field. I have written numerous articles and essays on the subject, and am a frequently consulted speaker on the topic. My first book After Pornified: How Women Are Transforming Pornography & Why It Really Matters has been called “a goldmine for all sex-positive women and men,” and a “candid, well-informed personal story of how a good girl became involved in porn.”
I grew up in Norway on the outskirts of Oslo where I did most of my undergraduate work. I moved to the United States in the mid nineties when I was in my early twenties. By 2000, I had completed my graduate degrees from the University of Washington in Seattle (I have a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature), and was working as a college professor in Northfield, Minnesota, a small college town just south of the Twin Cities. I continued to serve as a college professor for ten years, teaching courses on literature, film and women’s studies.
In 2008 I became a mom. The birth of my daughter changed my life. Determined to make a positive change, I left my position as a tenured professor in order to focus on my family and writing that matters.
(Please visit First the Egg for my essay I left a tenured academic position, but I am not a goner.)
After 18 years in the US, I returned to Norway where I live in Oslo with my daughter.
